Fort Lauderdale City in Florida, which is dubbed as the "Venice of America", is a popular tourist destination in the state. It got its name after the numerous forts in the region and after Major William Lauderdale who along with the soldiers under his command built the first fort. With its beaches, climate, nightlife, convention facilities and yachting industry, the city attracts millions of visitors year round. In fact, in 2006, Ft Lauderdale's recorded visitors reached 10.35 million.

The city has more than seven miles of beaches where visitors have a choice between relaxing and participating in sporting events. Boating, jet skiing and wind surfing are popular among adventure seekers, however, the beach can also be seen during peak tourist season filled with visitors who like to just sit back and relax. The coastline is also where the Aquatic Complex, which offers swimming and diving instructions, is located.

Yachting and similar on-water activities are popular in Ft Lauderdale, and with its marinas, the city is also a common cruise (Bahamas and Caribbean) vacation stop. Each year, the city hosts the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show where boat builders and manufacturers exhibit different types of vessels and accessories. The event does not only cover the marinas but as well as inland convention facilities where visitors, locals and yachting enthusiasts attend.

Shops, cafes and restaurants which commonly offer al fresco dining can be found in the long stretch of Ft Lauderdale Beach. Just about any cuisine is available in this area, from Mediterranean, Latin, Italian and Florida-inspired dishes.
