Columbus is the capital city of Ohio and is named after the explorer, Christopher Columbus. It was founded in 1812 although it was not until 1816 that it was recognized as the state capital. Football games, made popular by the college team Ohio State Buckeyes, is an annual fall event in Columbus and on which sport enthusiasts get to witness why the game forms part of the city's cultural scene.

The city's history is centered during the civil war and today, that heritage is mirrored by the Ohio Village which is dubbed as a living history museum. This history is also commemorated annually during the Hilltop Bean Dinner hosted on the West Side.

Columbus hosts several cultural and art festivities including one of the country's largest state fair. The Jazz and Rib Fest is a musical and culinary annual event held every July in the downtown area. During this time, visitors get a taste of rib barbecues and performances from numerous Jazz artists. The city also showcases stage performances from the well-known Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the BalletMet Columbus. Art galleries abound Columbus' Short North neighborhood and once a month, they attract sightseers during the customary "Gallery Hop". Galleries tend to be open until late at night and visitors and locals get to witness the festive mood as performers and musicians fill the streets.

Dining and the nightlife is scattered throughout the downtown area and its north: Short North and south: German Village neighborhoods. The city's culinary scene offers numerous choices like tapas, steaks, Italian pasta dishes, cream puffs and even contemporary cuisines.
