Lima is a city located in Peru. The largest city in the country, it serves as the capital and the political, economic and cultural center of the region. The capital city is so significant to the country that scholars insist there are two Perus: Lima and the rest of the Peruvian regions.

With a population of 6.4 million, the city is home to one third of the Peru´s entire population. In terms of economic contribution, it accounts for two-thirds of the nations´ gross domestic product. The intense concentration of resources on the city has prompted the government to seek decentralization programs, but then until the present time, Lima remains to be the preferred venue of businesses, even by government agencies.

A sizeable portion of the population in Lima is comprised of university students, the capital city being home to the Peru´s premiere academic institutions like the National University of San Marcos, which was established way back in 1551; the National Engineering University, established in 1896; and the La Molina National Agrarian University, established in 1902. Several other private colleges are also established in the city.
