Scents in Hotels
Posted September 9, 2009 by Mary Haven
Scents in Hotels – Is there a difference?

Studies show that scents often bring about memories of old forgotten days and are usually associated with a particular moment in the past for a person. This is probably one of the reasons why scents in hotels are gaining grounds as being a good focus of various marketing strategies for the lodging industry. Hotels usually market themselves based on how they look – the architecture, the design, the over-all look and feel of the entire place, but there have been several high-end hotels that are advertising scent strips that aim to lure guests into their establishments.

A New Way of Marketing Hotels

Marketing hotels using scents is a novel and pretty interesting move away from advertisements that offer the guests on what the hotel looks like. Besides, basing advertisements with the architecture of the hotel is becoming a tough competition since most hotels are usually at par when it comes to the design of the place. This made the hotel industry shift its marketing techniques to that which caters to its clients´ sensory organs – by pumping varied sorts of perfumes in their accommodations.

Most hotels use scent machines that send aromas wafting through its hallways and lobbies. Usually, there are different types of scents that are generated for a specific part of the hotel. An example of which is sending delicious whiffs of sugar cookies or mocha in coffee shops, or a soft summer scent near the hotel´s swimming pools. Some hotels also spray their rooms with ginger scent or green tea aroma that are designed to help guests relax.

Choosing a signature scent for a hotel is not an easy task. It requires a team of specialists that know what they´re doing and have been working on concocting special fragrances and perfumes for different occasions and can induce a certain reaction or feeling from the users.

Studies have shown that scents can be used to evoke a certain type of emotion from people. This is why the type of scent that is used for a specific place in the hotel is also crucial. White tea aroma is designed to help calm guests and remove stress after a hard day of travel or on a business related trip. Some of the hotels also use fragrances that are homely – evoking a residential feel for the guests and making them feel at home. Some hotels also regularly change the scents that they spray into various parts of the establishment to match each season.
