Sheets in Hotels Thread Count

Sheets in Hotels – Thread Count

Does the thread count matter in the hotel sheets? The answer is both a “yes, it matters” and a “no, it does not matter”.

The Thread Count Matters

A lot of manufacturers and dealers will tell you that the thread count of the sheet matters because the higher the count, the better the sheet will be. Do you think that hotels follow this rule? One of the best things about high thread count is that the higher the value, the more sophisticated it would look. The sheets are also more expensive – giving the impression that the classy hotel is truly classy and knows how to pamper its guests.

The Thread Count does not Matter

Still, it is important to understand what thread count means and why it does not really matter what the numbers say as long as the sheets are not rough to touch.

The thread count is the number of vertical and horizontal threads per square inch of fiber. That means that you really can´t say that the higher the count the softer the fabric because thicker threads will surely have a lower count but these have softer feel. Although the finer threads will have a smoother feel, these can be less durable than their thicker counterparts.

That is why hotel sheets vary in terms of thread count. You can´t say that Hotel A has better linen because it uses a 400 count while Hotel B has cheap linen because it uses a 200 count. You must also remember that there is really no such as thing as a count more than 500 – it is something that manufacturers use to make the consumers think that they are buying a high thread count when, in fact, the plied yarn was created from twisted gossamer-fine threads (which shouldn´t be considered as individual threads).

The Material Matters

When gauging how hotel sheets are, you must remember that the material that the sheets were made of is the one that matters.

Cotton is among the most popular materials for hotel sheets – these sheets are at their best around 200 to 400 thread count. Cotton weaved with polyester can also be a good choice – these are soft yet more durable than 100% cotton. Also, there are hotel sheets that look like 100% cotton but have about 40% polyester in them.

Asking for the thread count of the hotel sheets when making a reservation will sound really weird but if you are uncomfortable with certain fabrics, you may ask about them when you call the hotel for further inquiries.
